Reuters: Antinori Claims Three Clonal Pregnancies, One in 10th Week

Italian fertility specialist Severino Antinori is now explicitly claiming that three women are pregnant with clones. According to him, one of the pregnancies is in the 10th week, one in the seventh and one in the sixth. (Reuters 5/8/02 – the full Reuters story can be found at www.cloninginformation.org)

There is almost universal agreement that the type of cloning in which Antinori is involved -- cloning intended to result in a live – is repugnant and should be banned. Such an attempt at live birth cloning entails grave risks to both the woman and the cloned embryo she bears.

However, those who think they can stop the Antinoris of the world by banning implantation of a clone into a woman’s womb, while allowing cloning of embryos for research, are seriously mistaken. Such a law will inevitably lead to born human clones. Creating a cloned embryo is a complex procedure, while implantation is a fairly simple one. While some want to distinguish the cloning of embryos for use in research from "reproductive" cloning, the research needed to refine the techniques used in the first will inevitably result in their being put to use to achieve the second.
